Sonne: an AI conversation companion for older people
Sonne listens, tells stories and plays games with you, by voice or by text. Free of charge, without registration and without an app, directly in your browser.
Many of our patients are alone for long stretches of the day. The nurse comes to change a dressing or give insulin, and then the flat is quiet again. We built Sonne for those hours: a voice that listens, asks questions and takes its time.
Sonne is an artificial intelligence, not a person. It chats about the old days, reads aloud stories from old Berlin and fairy tales, sets riddles and plays memory games. Everything runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
Relatives can open Sonne for their mother, father or grandparents and start the first conversation together. Anyone who prefers typing to talking can simply write to Sonne.

Chatting
About the old days, about the family, about the weather. Sonne listens, asks questions and remembers what you tell it, if you allow it to.
Listening to stories
A morning in the Markthalle (market hall), the conductress on Linie 68, Frau Holle, the first snow: Sonne reads aloud and you can pause at any time.
Games and puzzles
Word Pairs, Number Chain, Complete the Proverbs, Memory Round, Guess the Word and more. The games also work without a microphone.
Speaking or writing
You talk to Sonne as you would on the phone, or you type your message. The buttons are big enough for any finger.
How to start a conversation
- Open the page: Go to sonnenstrahlen-pflege.de/sonne on your phone, tablet or computer. There is no registration.
- Choose speaking or writing: To speak, the browser asks once for access to the microphone. Sonne explains beforehand what you need to tap.
- Just begin: Say “Tell me a story” or “Let's do a riddle”. Sonne guides you through the conversation.
What Sonne does not do
- Sonne does not give medical advice: no diagnoses, no medication, no dosages.
- At any sign of an emergency, the first thing Sonne says is: “Please call 112 now.” If the doctor's practice is closed, Sonne names the on-call medical service 116117 (ärztlicher Bereitschaftsdienst).
- Sonne only remembers personal things if you agree.
- Sonne does not replace a nurse or a visit. It bridges the hours in between.

What does Sonne cost?
Nothing. Sonne is free and needs no registration and no app. It runs directly in the browser at sonnenstrahlen-pflege.de/sonne.
Which languages does Sonne speak?
Sonne speaks and writes in German, English, Russian and Arabic. Visitors whose language setting is French, Dutch, Danish, Polish or Swedish get English.
How long can you talk to Sonne?
A voice conversation lasts at most 15 minutes. Up to 4 voice conversations a day are possible, 30 minutes in total. Beyond that, you can keep writing.
Is Sonne a person?
No. Sonne is an artificial intelligence that Sonnenstrahlen Pflege set up for older people. If you would like to speak to a person, you can reach our office on 030 64828209.
Can Sonne help with medical questions?

What happens to what I tell Sonne?
Your conversations are saved so that Sonne can keep track of the thread. Sonne only remembers personal things with your consent. What we store and for how long is set out in our privacy policy.
