Dahlem was laid out as a villa colony and has remained one: wide streets, large gardens, two-storey houses with a staircase inside, and the buildings of the Freie Universität along Thielallee and Habelschwerdter Allee. People who need care here have usually lived in the same house for decades and want to stay exactly there — the question is rarely whether home care is enough, but how it fits into a house built for a different stage of life. That is why the first things we look at on a home visit are the stairs, the bathroom and the bedroom.

The service is run by Sonnenstrahlen Pflege UG (haftungsbeschränkt), approved for care benefits in kind under SGB XI and for doctor-prescribed home nursing care under § 37 SGB V. People with statutory insurance get no invoice from us; we bill the Krankenkasse (health insurer) and the Pflegekasse (long-term care insurance fund) directly. Privately insured people and those entitled to Beihilfe (the civil servants' medical allowance) receive an invoice itemised by service and date. We work in German, English and Russian — around the university, English is asked for regularly.

The early shift in a country house

Washing, dressing, the way down from the upper floor. Where the stairs become the problem, we raise the subject of a care bed on the ground floor early — that is often the difference between staying at home and moving out.

Everything written on the Muster 12 prescription

Insulin to schedule, dressing changes, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, compression stockings from class II upwards, catheters and stoma care. If the practice on Königin-Luise-Straße changes the orders, we follow the new ones from the very next visit.

Wound care at home

Ulcus cruris (leg ulcers), pressure sores, sutures after an operation — treated at the prescribed intervals, documented by size, wound edge and exudate, and reported back to the treating doctor.

Hours in which relatives are off duty

Accompaniment to the Botanischer Garten, a walk to the Domäne Dahlem, company in the afternoon. This is paid for out of the Entlastungsbetrag (relief amount) under § 45b SGB XI, which is available from Pflegegrad (care level) 1 onwards.

What is covered, from when, and by whom

For people with statutory insurance, prescribed Behandlungspflege (medical home nursing) is paid for by the Krankenkasse, and the decisive date is the day the practice signs. If the Muster 12 reaches the insurer within three working days of being issued, the visits made while it is being assessed are covered retrospectively from the date of issue as well (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). Under § 61 SGB V adults pay ten per cent of the daily cost for a maximum of 28 treatment days a year, plus ten euros per Verordnung (prescription).

People entitled to Beihilfe and privately insured people receive an invoice itemised by service and date. Anything through the Pflegekasse requires a Pflegegrad: benefits in kind under § 36 SGB XI from Pflegegrad 2, and at Pflegegrad 1 the Entlastungsbetrag under § 45b SGB XI. We name the actual sum after the free home visit, in writing and split into the insurer's share and your own contribution.

From the phone call to the first early shift

  2. A home visit, usually in the same week: A qualified nurse looks at the stairs, the bathroom and the bedroom and says openly what should be changed in the house so that the care holds up over time. The visit costs nothing.
  3. The Muster 12 goes off at once: We take the Verordnung to the Krankenkasse within three working days, so that cover starts on the day it was issued. If there is no Pflegegrad yet, we file the application with the Pflegekasse at the same time.

The bedroom is upstairs — what do you advise?

In many Dahlem houses the internal staircase is the real bottleneck. It is often enough to move the bed and the care downstairs; a care bed can be applied for through the Pflegekasse as an aid. At the home visit we say what is realistic in your layout, and we help with the application.

Can the care be given in English?

Our nurses work in German, English and Russian. Around the Freie Universität, English is regularly the language in which arrangements actually get through. Tell us your preferred language when you register; whether it can be covered on every single round is decided by the duty roster.

Do we have to wait for the insurer's approval?

No. As soon as the practice has signed the Muster 12 we may start. If the form reaches the Krankenkasse by the third working day after that, it covers the cost retrospectively from the date of issue (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). For Grundpflege (personal care) and support, the Pflegegrad decides.

Without a recognised Pflegegrad — is anything still possible?

Behandlungspflege yes — it depends solely on the doctor's prescription. Personal care and support require an assessment: benefits in kind under § 36 SGB XI from Pflegegrad 2, and at Pflegegrad 1 the Entlastungsbetrag under § 45b SGB XI. We fill in the application together with you.

Your care is planned at Heilbronner Str. 1, 10711 Berlin-Halensee — by appointment only, please. There are further offices at Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1 in Westend and Sickingenstr. 52 in Moabit. We do not work nights.
