Home care in Moabit: care between Turmstraße and the Westhafen

Our main office stands right in the middle of the district, at Sickingenstr. 52. The early shifts set out from there into 10551, 10553, 10555, 10557, 10559 and the Westhafen. We can take on new clients: 030 64828209.

Moabit sits on an island: the Spree, the Schifffahrtskanal and the Westhafenkanal draw its boundary. Our desk stands right inside it, at Sickingenstr. 52 in the Huttenkiez. If you promise an insulin dose for seven in the morning, you should not need a bridge in rush-hour traffic to keep that promise. This page deals with this one part of town only; Hansaviertel, Tiergarten and the Sprengelkiez are on the pages for the district of Mitte and for Wedding.

The service belongs to Sonnenstrahlen Pflege UG (haftungsbeschränkt) and is approved by the statutory funds both for care benefits in kind under SGB XI and for measures prescribed by a doctor under SGB V. People with statutory insurance receive no bill; we settle directly with the funds. Privately insured clients receive an invoice for their insurer. We work in German, English and Russian, and we answer enquiries on the same working day.

What we drive between Beusselstraße and Europacity

Early shift in a Gründerzeit tenement

Washing at the basin or in the shower, dressing, the way from bed to armchair. For the narrow old bathrooms around the Ottopark we plan extra minutes.

Everything written on the Muster 12

Insulin to a set regimen, changes of dressing, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, compression stockings from class II upwards, catheters and stoma. Changed orders are carried out at once.

Wound care instead of a trip to the surgery

Ulcus cruris, pressure sores, sutures after an operation — treated at the prescribed intervals and documented by size, wound edge and exudate.

Hours in which relatives are off duty

A walk through the Kleiner Tiergarten, company on the way to the Arminiusmarkthalle, an afternoon with someone there — paid from the relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) under § 45b SGB XI, which is available from care level (Pflegegrad) 1 onwards.

Six postcodes, one part of town

Five postcodes belong to the district itself: 10551, 10553, 10555, 10557 and 10559. Then there is the Westhafen, listed under 13353 and Moabit all the same. 10557 is shared between the district and the Hansaviertel; Alt-Moabit and the Heidestraße count here, the houses south of the Spree do not. We do drive to neighbours such as Tiergarten and Charlottenburg-Nord — as neighbours, not as Moabit. From Wedding only 13353 belongs here; all the other Wedding postcodes lie outside.

What is covered, from when, and by whom

Prescribed medical treatment care (Behandlungspflege) is paid for by the health insurer (Krankenkasse); its duty to pay hangs on the day of signature. If we hand the Muster 12 in there by the third working day after it was issued, the visits are covered from the day of issue, including the review period that follows (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). Waiting for a letter of approval would only be wasted time. Under § 61 SGB V adults pay ten per cent of the daily costs on at most 28 treatment days a year, plus ten euros per prescription form; an exemption notice suspends this.

With the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) it is the care level that counts. The benefits-in-kind budget under § 36 SGB XI opens up at care level (Pflegegrad) 2 and covers basic care (Grundpflege), domestic help and support; at care level 1 the relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) under § 45b SGB XI remains. We name a figure only after the free home visit — in writing, with the fund's share and your own share.

From the phone call to the first early shift

  1. You tell us what is needed: A call to 030 64828209 is enough. With the street and house number it is clear within two minutes whether your address lies on a Moabit round.
  2. A home visit, usually in the same week: A qualified nurse looks at the bathroom, the stairwell and the doorbell system and notes down the tasks that are needed, and at what time. There is no charge for this.
  3. The Muster 12 goes off straight away: The prescription (Verordnung) to the health insurer, the care level application to the long-term care insurance fund: we get the prescription there within three working days, so that cover starts on the day of issue.
  4. The first shift rings your bell: You receive firm times and a small team; the named nurse responsible for you comes along on the first visit.

From the Beusselkiez to the Stephankiez

Which Moabit addresses do you visit regularly?

The whole district: 10551, 10553, 10555, 10557 and 10559, plus the Westhafen under 13353. We share 10557 with the Hansaviertel, which is on the page for the district of Mitte. From Wedding, only 13353 belongs here.

Do we have to wait for the insurer's approval?

No. Once it has been signed at the surgery we may start: if the form reaches the health insurer (Krankenkasse) by the third working day after that, the insurer covers the costs retrospectively from the day of issue (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). For basic care and support, by contrast, it is the care level (Pflegegrad) that counts.

Without a recognised care level — is anything still possible?

Medical treatment care (Behandlungspflege), yes; that hangs on the prescription (Verordnung). Basic care and support need an assessment: benefits in kind require at least care level (Pflegegrad) 2 under § 36 SGB XI, and at care level 1 the relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) remains. We fill in the application together and explain what the Medizinischer Dienst will ask about.

Fourth floor, no lift, a heavy front door — can you manage that?

Yes; in Moabit's old buildings that is the normal case, and it is allowed for in our travel times. What still needs settling is access: a key with relatives, or a key safe by the door. Otherwise the early shift stands in front of a locked door.

Hardly any German is spoken at home — does that work?

Our staff work in German, English and Russian. That often decides whether a dose really gets through. Tell us your preferred language when you register; whether it can be covered on every round is decided by the duty roster.

Where is the office, and do you also work at night?

Your care is planned at Sickingenstr. 52, 10553 Berlin; please come by appointment only. There are two further offices in the west of the city: one in Halensee (Heilbronner Str. 1), one in Westend (Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1). We do not work nights.

The office is probably just round the corner

The telephone: 030 64828209. Post goes to info@sonnenstrahlen-pflege.de. Give us the postcode and house number, and you will know at once whether your address lies on a Moabit round. The visit to your home costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
