Home care in Westend: nursing between Theodor-Heuss-Platz and the Olympiastadion

Villas on Preußenallee, rows of flats along the Heerstraße, the garden suburb of Eichkamp: in Westend the addresses lie far apart. Our office sits right in the middle of it, at Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1. We are taking on new clients: 030 64828209.

Westend is the greenest residential locality in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district and at the same time the most spread out. Between Theodor-Heuss-Platz, Reichsstraße and Steubenplatz stand villas with front gardens; along the Heerstraße and around Brixplatz there are rows of flats from the 1920s and 1950s; behind the Messegelände (exhibition grounds) lies the garden suburb of Eichkamp with its narrow lanes. For a care round that means fewer doorbells per building but longer journeys between two appointments — garden gates, dogs and driveways. We plan for that rather than overlook it: the time you are given holds even when two kilometres of Preußenallee lie in between.

The provider is Sonnenstrahlen Pflege UG (haftungsbeschränkt), approved for care benefits in kind under SGB XI and for medically prescribed home nursing care under § 37 SGB V. People with statutory insurance receive no invoice from us; we bill the health insurer (Krankenkasse) and the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) directly. Privately insured people receive an itemised list of the visits made, for their own policy. We work in German, English and Russian. Enquiries are answered the same working day.

Our office at Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1 is inside the locality itself — nowhere in our area is the journey to the early shift shorter. This page covers Westend alone; Charlottenburg south of the Kaiserdamm and Halensee have pages of their own.

What we cover between Reichsstraße and Eichkamp

Early shift in a family house

Washing, dressing, the walk from the bed to the breakfast table. In Westend a lift is missing more often than in the inner city; instead there is an internal staircase to the upper floor — during the home visit we check whether the bathroom and the bedroom are on the same level.

Everything listed on the Muster 12

Insulin to a set regimen, dressing changes, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, compression stockings from class II upwards, catheters and stoma care. If the practice on Reichsstraße changes the orders, we work to the new ones from the very next visit.

Wound care at home

Ulcus cruris, pressure sores, sutures after an operation at the DRK Kliniken Westend — treated at the prescribed intervals and documented by size, wound edge and exudate, without anyone having to get into a car.

Hours in which relatives are off duty

A walk around Brixplatz, company on a shopping trip at Theodor-Heuss-Platz, someone to sit with in the afternoon. This is paid from the relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) under § 45b SGB XI, which is available from care level (Pflegegrad) 1 onwards.

Five postcodes around Theodor-Heuss-Platz

Westend carries the postcodes 14050, 14052, 14053, 14055 and 14057. We drive to Reichsstraße and Ahornallee, Preußenallee and Herbartstraße, Steubenplatz, the Heerstraße as far as the Olympiastadion, the houses around Brixplatz, the Eichkamp colony behind the Messegelände and the Kaiserdamm up to Sophie-Charlotte-Platz. Grunewald begins south of the railway and has its own page, as does Halensee. Whether your street lies on one of our rounds is settled on the telephone in two minutes: 030 64828209.

What is covered, from when and by whom

Prescribed treatment care (Behandlungspflege) is paid for by the health insurer (Krankenkasse), and the decisive day is the day the practice signs. If the Muster 12 reaches the insurer within three working days of being issued, the visits made while it is still being assessed are covered retrospectively from the day of issue (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). Waiting for the decision therefore only costs time. Under § 61 SGB V adults pay ten per cent of the daily costs for a maximum of 28 treatment days a year, plus ten euros per prescription (Verordnung); anyone who is exempt pays none of it.

With the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) it is not the prescription that decides but the care level (Pflegegrad). The benefits-in-kind budget under § 36 SGB XI is available from care level 2 for personal care, housekeeping and companionship; at care level 1 the relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) under § 45b SGB XI remains. What is left to pay yourself we state only after the free home visit — in writing, with the insurer's share and your own share set out separately.

From the call to the first early shift

  1. You tell us what is needed: One call to 030 64828209 is enough. With the street and house number it is immediately clear whether your address is on the Westend round or already south of the railway in Grunewald.
  2. Home visit, usually in the same week: A qualified nurse looks at the bathroom, the stairs and the access, and records which tasks are needed at which time of day. From the office at Theodor-Heuss-Platz it is rarely more than ten minutes away. The visit costs nothing.
  3. The Muster 12 goes off at once: We take the prescription (Verordnung) to the health insurer within three working days, so that cover starts on the day of issue. If there is no care level yet, we submit the application to the Pflegekasse at the same time.
  4. The first shift rings your doorbell: You are given firm times and a small, settled team; the named nurse responsible for you comes along on the first visit.

From Reichsstraße to Eichkamp

Which addresses in Westend do you visit regularly?

The postcodes 14050 to 14057: Reichsstraße, Preußenallee, Ahornallee, Steubenplatz, Brixplatz, the Heerstraße as far as the Olympiastadion, the Kaiserdamm and Gartenstadt Eichkamp. Grunewald south of the railway and Halensee have pages of their own — we drive there just the same.

How do you get onto a property with a gate and a dog?

We settle that before the first visit, not during it. The usual arrangements are a key safe on the gate, a key with relatives in the house, or a firm agreement about who opens up. Where a dog runs free, we record in writing how it is secured at the time of the visit.

Do we have to wait for the insurer's approval?

No. As soon as the practice has signed the Muster 12 we may start. If the form reaches the health insurer by the third working day after that at the latest, the insurer covers the costs retrospectively from the day of issue (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). This does not apply to personal care and companionship — there the care level (Pflegegrad) decides.

Without a recognised care level — is anything still possible?

Treatment care (Behandlungspflege) yes, it depends solely on the doctor's prescription. Personal care and companionship require an assessment: care benefits in kind under § 36 SGB XI from care level 2, and at care level 1 the relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) under § 45b SGB XI. We fill in the application together with you and tell you beforehand what the Medizinischer Dienst (medical assessment service) will ask about.

Do you also come after an operation at the DRK Kliniken Westend?

Yes. We carry on with sutures, drains and dressings at home as soon as the discharge date is fixed. It is best to get in touch while the ward is still planning — then the first shift is at the door on the day after discharge instead of a week later.

Where is the office, and do you work at night?

At Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1, 14052 Berlin — inside the locality itself; visits by appointment only, please. There are further offices at Heilbronner Str. 1 in Halensee and Sickingenstr. 52 in Moabit. We do not work nights.

The office is at Theodor-Heuss-Platz

The telephone: 030 64828209. Post goes to info@sonnenstrahlen-pflege.de. Give us the postcode and the house number and you will know at once whether your address is on a Westend round. The visit to your home costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
