Chronic wounds heal slowly and need a dependable, repeated routine. Across Berlin we care for people with leg ulcers (Ulcus cruris), pressure sores (Dekubitus) and diabetic foot syndrome, as well as patients recovering from surgery. What is treated is decided by the practice; we carry out those instructions at your home – at the agreed time, with the prescribed material, at the prescribed frequency. That way you no longer have to travel to a practice several times a week for a dressing change.

We work in line with the healing phase: cleansing, wound dressing and bandaging technique follow the state of the wound and the doctor's instructions. We record the findings at every visit – size, wound margin, exudate, reported pain – with photographic documentation if you wish. The records go to your GP or specialist practice, so that any change of therapy is decided there on a sound basis. If a wound deteriorates or shows signs of infection, we report it promptly.

The wound is treated by a qualified nurse from Sonnenstrahlen Pflege UG (haftungsbeschränkt): approved by the statutory health insurers for home nursing care under § 37 SGB V, and additionally holding a care contract under SGB XI once a care level (Pflegegrad) also comes into play. Our cars set off from three addresses in the west and north of Berlin; the addresses are listed in the frequently asked questions. If you are insured with a statutory health insurer, you will see no invoice for these visits. We explain findings and answer questions in German, Russian or English – including, if needed, to relatives who do not live in Berlin.

Who pays for wound care

Wound care in your own home falls under home nursing care as set out in § 37 SGB V; it is prescribed by your GP or specialist practice on form Muster 12. What matters next is the date of issue: if the form reaches your health insurer (Krankenkasse) within the following three working days, the insurer covers the wound care retrospectively from exactly that day, including the review time that then follows at the insurer (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). A dressing due today therefore does not wait for a decision. We handle the submission, and we remind the practice early enough about the follow-up prescription (Folgeverordnung).

Insured adults pay ten euros per prescription (Verordnung) issued under § 61 SGB V, plus ten per cent of the daily cost; that daily share ends after 28 treatment days in a calendar year. If you are exempt, show us the notice once and we charge nothing further. With statutory health and long-term care insurance we settle directly with the fund; with a private policy our invoice goes to you and you claim reimbursement under your own tariff. Personal care at the washbasin is paid for by a different body than the dressing change: it is met by the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse), out of the benefit-in-kind allowance provided by § 36 SGB XI from care level (Pflegegrad) 2; with care level 1 only the monthly relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) is available (§ 45b SGB XI). If both are needed, we sort it out at the first visit to your home – and that visit is not charged.

From your enquiry to the first dressing change

  1. Your enquiry: Tell us briefly what kind of wound it is and who has been treating it so far: 030 64828209.
  2. Prescription from the practice: Your GP or specialist practice sets out on form Muster 12 which material is used and how often the dressing is changed. Once it has been issued, we pass the form to your health insurer within the three-day deadline.
  3. Wound assessment at home: A qualified nurse looks at the wound, the surrounding skin and the home situation, and agrees the visiting times with you.
  4. Ongoing care: We change the dressing at the prescribed interval, record every finding and report to the practice what has changed.

Questions about wound care

Who pays for wound care at home?

The health insurer (Krankenkasse), as soon as a prescription (Verordnung) under § 37 SGB V exists – and from the day it was issued, not only from the day it is approved. The account is settled between us and the insurer; no invoice for the nursing care reaches you. What remains open is the statutory co-payment, unless you hold an exemption notice. Privately insured patients are invoiced for the visits carried out and submit our document to their own tariff.

Which kinds of wound do you take on?

We take on chronic wounds such as leg ulcers (Ulcus cruris), pressure sores (Dekubitus) and wounds in diabetic foot syndrome, as well as post-operative wounds after a hospital stay. The treatment is ordered by the practice: dressing, cleansing and interval are stated in the prescription (Verordnung). With a leg ulcer, compression therapy is usually part of it – but under SGB V putting the stockings on and taking them off can only be prescribed from compression class II; with class I we will do it on request as a self-paid service. We cannot promise a healing outcome, but we can promise an orderly and documented approach.

From when can you take over the dressing changes?

We are currently able to take on new patients. Write or call – you will hear back from us on the same working day, and we will then look at the wound at your home shortly afterwards. The starting date depends on the prescription (Verordnung) and the material, not on an approval letter: if we pass on the Muster 12 in good time, the dressing change is covered from the day it was issued. Without a doctor's prescription no insurer contributes; we may still treat the wound as a self-paid service, and you will have the price in writing beforehand. If the referral comes from a hospital, we settle the prescription, the material and the first appointment directly with the ward.

Does wound care go through the health insurer or the long-term care insurance fund?

Through the health insurer (Krankenkasse). Home nursing care under SGB V does not depend on a care level (Pflegegrad) but on the doctor's prescription – we will treat your wound even without a care level. If personal care, supervision or respite is added, the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) is responsible: benefits in kind under § 36 SGB XI are available from care level 2, while with care level 1 only the relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag) remains (§ 45b SGB XI). One exception is set out in § 37 Abs. 1 SGB V: if care at home can avoid or shorten a hospital admission, the health insurer also steps in, for a limited period, for personal care and domestic help.

Where are your offices, and which area do you cover?

Three locations: the main office at Sickingenstr. 52 in Moabit, plus Heilbronner Str. 1 (Halensee district) and Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1 (Westend district). We have no address in Charlottenburg itself, but we cover it all the same. We drive the west and the north of the city, among others Charlottenburg, Westend, Charlottenburg-Nord, Spandau, Siemensstadt, Schöneberg and Friedenau; of Wedding, only 13353. The postcodes are listed above.

Who obtains the dressing material?

The material follows from the doctor's prescription. The practice issues a prescription and it is dispensed by a pharmacy or a medical supply store (Sanitätshaus). We give notice in good time when dressings, compresses or compression bandages are running low, and we tell the practice when a change appears sensible.
