Home care in the Mitte district: nursing at home in Tiergarten and the Hansaviertel
In the Mitte district we cover the west: Tiergarten with 10787, the Hansaviertel, Moabit and, from Wedding, 13353. We are currently able to take on new clients, and nobody here waits longer than one working day for an answer — 030 64828209.
Most of the rounds in this district start from Sickingenstraße 52 in 10553 Berlin. Moabit has a page of its own; this one is about Mitte as a whole, that is, about every corner of the district we can reach reliably: Tiergarten, the Hansaviertel, Moabit and the Sprengelkiez in Wedding. The service is run by Sonnenstrahlen Pflege UG (haftungsbeschränkt). Two approvals stand behind it: the one from the Pflegekassen (long-term care insurance funds) under SGB XI, and the one that § 37 SGB V opens up for home nursing care. If you have statutory insurance, no invoice goes to you; it goes to your Krankenkasse (health insurer) and your Pflegekasse. Anyone privately insured receives an invoice for the visits made and settles it under their own policy.
Mitte is one of the largest districts in the city, and we are far from serving every corner of it. The historic Mitte locality with Alexanderplatz, the Museumsinsel and the Rosenthaler Vorstadt is not on our rounds, and neither is Gesundbrunnen. What we can promise is the western strip between the Spree, the Ringbahn and the Großer Tiergarten. We draw that line deliberately: an insulin injection at seven in the morning only holds if nobody has to cross half the city for it.
Once a doctor’s Verordnung (prescription) exists, care can start straight away. We do not wait for a letter of approval from the insurer, because its duty to pay begins on the day the form is issued; how that works in law is set out below in the section on costs. We speak, advise and document in German, English and Russian.
What we bring to your door in the Mitte district
Injections and medication
Insulin to the doctor’s regimen, the weekly pill box filled, blood pressure and blood sugar kept under review. The form goes to the insurer within the deadline — the visits are then covered from the date it was issued.
Grundpflege (basic personal care) in a period building
Washing, showering, skin care and the safe route from bed to armchair. This is paid from the benefits-in-kind budget under § 36 SGB XI, which starts at Pflegegrad 2 (care level 2); below that, § 45b SGB XI applies.
Company and outings in the Tiergarten
A turn around the Neuer See, the way to the Bürgeramt or to the doctor’s practice, company in the afternoon. This is funded through § 45b SGB XI, the Entlastungsbetrag (relief allowance) from the Pflegekasse.
Advisory visit under § 37.3
The compulsory appointment for everyone drawing Pflegegeld (the care allowance). Besides approved services, recognised advice centres and nursing professionals commissioned by the Pflegekasse may also carry it out; with us you can book it even without ongoing care.

Who pays what in the Mitte district
Home nursing care under SGB V begins with the prescription, not with the insurer’s stamp. What counts is the date of the signature: if the form reaches the Krankenkasse within the three working days that follow, it pays from that day on — including the days while its assessment is still running (§ 6 Abs. 6 HKP-Richtlinie). So there is no waiting period until a decision arrives. Adults are left only with what § 61 SGB V lays down: one tenth of the daily cost on no more than 28 treatment days in the calendar year, plus ten euros per Verordnung. If you are exempt, you show us the notice exactly once.
The Pflegekasse follows a logic of its own. Its benefits-in-kind budget under § 36 SGB XI only opens up at Pflegegrad 2; it pays for personal care, help in the home and company. Anyone with Pflegegrad 1 does not receive that budget, but does receive the Entlastungsbetrag under § 45b SGB XI for hours of company and relief. For people with statutory insurance we bill both pots ourselves, separately from one another, even when both arise during the same visit.
What adds up by the end of the month cannot honestly be estimated in advance. Only after the free appointment in your home is it clear how many visits a week are needed and how long each of them takes. After that you receive a written breakdown based on the applicable remuneration agreements: the insurer’s share, the Entlastungsbetrag and, if anything is left over, the part you pay yourself. With private insurance you receive the same breakdown.
Four steps, and the round is set
- A quick phone call: You reach the office on 030 64828209; in writing, info@sonnenstrahlen-pflege.de. Tell us the street, the house number and what it is about — the answer comes the same working day.
- First conversation at the kitchen table: A qualified nurse sits down with you, goes through the daily routine, the medication, the bathroom and how to get into the building, and notes what is needed at what time. There is no charge for this appointment.
- Getting the paperwork moving: Verordnung, application for a Pflegegrad, powers of attorney: we tell you which sheet goes where, help fill them in and take the Verordnung to your Krankenkasse within the deadline.
- The round takes you on: You get fixed times and a small team that knows your doorbell. On the first day your named nurse comes along on the round and introduces herself in person.
Questions from Mitte
Do you also come to Alexanderplatz and the Rosenthaler Vorstadt?
No. Our area in this district ends in the west: Moabit, the Hansaviertel, Tiergarten and the Sprengelkiez in Wedding. We can serve 10551, 10553, 10555, 10557, 10559, 10787 and 13353 regularly. Addresses in the historic Mitte locality and in Gesundbrunnen lie outside it — we could not keep reliable times there, and a promise we cannot keep is no use to you.
What does home care cost in the Mitte district?
That is decided by the Pflegegrad, the doctor’s Verordnung and the actual need. Whatever the practice prescribes is paid by the Krankenkasse — what counts is the date on the form, not the arrival of a decision letter. Through the Pflegekasse, Pflegegrad 2 to 5 gives the benefits-in-kind budget, Pflegegrad 1 the Entlastungsbetrag. A dependable figure appears in the written quote after the home visit; flat prices on the internet miss reality, because no two needs are alike.
How soon can we start?
We are currently able to take on new clients. We answer your enquiry the same working day, and the free appointment in your home usually follows within a few days. Once the prescription is there, we can begin: the insurer’s cover starts on the day of issue, as long as the form reaches it in time. If a hospital discharge is coming up, it is best if the social services department gets in touch; we then put the first visit on the day of discharge.
Is Behandlungspflege (medical home nursing) possible without a Pflegegrad?
Yes. Injections, giving medication, changing dressings and compression stockings from class II upwards depend on the doctor’s Verordnung, not on a Pflegegrad. The other way round, the Pflegekasse requires a recognised level: § 36 SGB XI only knows benefits in kind from Pflegegrad 2 onwards, below that only the Entlastungsbetrag remains. Without a Verordnung, billing the Krankenkasse is ruled out; you can still book the visit, then as a self-payer. We also help with the application for a Pflegegrad and with the assessment by the Medizinischer Dienst.
Will we understand each other if little German is spoken at home?
Besides German, our staff work in English and Russian. Between the Beusselkiez and the Sprengelkiez in particular, that often decides whether instructions about medication, dressing changes and post from the insurer actually get through. Tell us the language you would like when you register. Whether it is available on every single round depends on the rota — we will tell you honestly what is possible.
Do you have a night service, and where is the office?
We do not offer a round-the-clock service; we work to a fixed round that starts early in the morning and ends in the evening. The office for this district is at Sickingenstraße 52, 10553 Berlin. Two further addresses lie outside it: Heilbronner Straße 1 in Halensee (10711) and Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1 in Westend (14052). Please come by only after arranging it by phone; during the day the nurses are out on their rounds.
